Quick answer: Maha Narayan Oil (Maha Narayan Taila) is a classical Ayurvedic massage oil made by infusing herbs such as Ashwagandha, Bala, Dashmool and Shatavari in sesame oil. It is traditionally used for abhyanga, a warm oil self-massage that supports relaxation, comfort and ease of movement. In winter, warm the oil slightly, massage it in with slow strokes, and bathe after 30 minutes to a few hours.
What is Maha Narayan Oil?
Maha Narayan Taila is a classical Ayurvedic oil for external use. In Ayurveda, dry, cold weather is linked with Vata, which shows up as dryness and stiffness. Warm oil massage is the traditional answer, which is why many Punjabi families bring out the oil bottle once Dussehra passes.
Prabhat Maha Narayan (Tail) Oil is prepared in small batches at our own pharmacy in Amritsar, and is available from Rs 139 in 100 ml, 200 ml and 500 ml packs.
Key ingredients
- Ashwagandha: valued in Ayurveda as a rejuvenating herb that supports strength and vitality.
- Bala: traditionally used to nourish the muscles and support flexibility.
- Dashmool: a classical blend of ten roots, regarded as calming and balancing.
- Shatavari: supports overall nourishment.
- Yashtimadhu (licorice) and Gokshura: traditionally added for their soothing and strengthening nature.
- Sesame oil (til taila): the classic warming base oil of Ayurvedic massage.
Traditional use
Abhyanga, anointing the body with oil, is described in classical texts such as the Charaka Samhita and Ashtanga Hridaya, and is part of the Ayurvedic daily routine (overview on the NIH's PubMed Central). Maha Narayan Oil is traditionally used in abhyanga to ease everyday stiffness and muscle tiredness, and for a feeling of warmth and calm before sleep.
How to use it
- Warm a small amount of oil by placing the bottle in warm water.
