Cure for Heel Pain

Heel pain is a very common pain phenomenon these days and is getting more pronounced in the middle age and elderly people and is one of the major causes of discomfort in the patients causing the deterioration in their quality of their lives. Pain in the heels can be caused due to multiple reasons. In this post we will try to cover a couple of them which are common causes of heel pain. We will try to uncover these common causes that can lead to symptoms like pain in heels while walking, heel pain in the morning, severe heel pain can t walk, etc. We will also suggest some common home remedies that can be employed safely to reduce the discomfort and give you heel pain relief.

Lack of Calcium

Due to lack of calcium, it is observed that bones start to form edges which is commonly seen as bony growth on the heel in the X-ray and is called as ‘Spur’ in the medical language. A heel spur is a bony outgrowth or calcium deposit that forms on the underside of the heel bone (calcaneus). These spurs typically develop where the plantar fascia, a band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot, attaches to the heel bone. Heel spurs are often associated with conditions like plantar fasciitis and can cause pain and discomfort in the heel, especially during activities that involve standing or walking. It's important to note that not all heel spurs cause pain, and their presence doesn't always require treatment. Treatment is usually focused on addressing the underlying condition, such as plantar fasciitis, rather than the spur itself.

It causes inflammation and discomfort, there is a sharp pain in the back of heel. To alleviate this pain, we will recommend a simple therapy which can be safely employed at home called Hydrotherapy. By Hydrotherapy we mean giving cold and Hot water baths to the affected area. For ex. Take two buckets and fill each one of them, half full, one with hot water and other one with ice cold water. Now dip the affected heel in one of the buckets for 90 seconds and then alternate it with the other bucket for 90 seconds again. Repeat this 90 second, alternating cycle for a few times and if the water loses its heat or cool then top it again with desired temperature water.

Note: To end this cycle there is a simple rule of thumb. One must end it with cold or hot water according to the season. If it is hot weather, then end it with Cold water bath and if it is cold weather then end the water bath with hot water.

This same treatment can be given to any body part including knees, back and other areas.

Inflammation due to Uric Acid

The second most common cause of inflammation in heels is due to increase in Uric Acid levels in the body. Uric Acid can be determined with a simple test. One of the common causes of increase I Uric Acid levels is due to the dietary habits. If one consumes a lot of high protein or Vata aggravating foods like Urda Dal (Maa ki Dal), Paneer, other lentils, Spinach, etc. it will spike the uric Acid levels in the body and causes swelling in joints because it causes the formation of protein crystals which gets stuck in the joints and often causes swelling and inflammation.

The easiest way to tackle this problem is by changing the dietary habits, we need to bring a change in the foods we eat. In case the inflammation is cause due to high Uric Acid levels Ayurveda is of view point that one must avoid the above said foods and rather consume foods like Bottle Gourd, Bitter Gourd, Cucumber, Garlic, Ginger, etc. These foods will reduce acidity in the body and help to cool down vata effects in the body. Below we have outlined a couple of recipes that can be taken to fight Uric Acid.

Vata Pacifying Juice

Bottle Gourd Juice 4 Teaspoons

Aloe Vera Pulp 4 Teaspoons

Cucumber Juice 4 Teaspoons

Ginger Juice 4 Teaspoons

Mix the above well and drink it fresh.

After a few days of consuming this juice, you will start feeling the difference in inflammation levels in the body. You will feel that heel pain due to Uric Acid has started to subside.

Joint Pain Chutney

Garlic

Ginger

Tomatoes

Take all the above in equal quantities and cook them lightly in Sesame Oil with a bit of cumin and salt for taste. Mix them after cooking and then mix them and form pulp. You will get a nice thick paste like chutney, which can be taken with meals. It not only has a great taste but also helps in reducing pain in joints and heels.
